Profile
Founder & President, John Peters enjoyed a 25-year career with the Oakville Fire Department; 15 of these years were spent as a fire fighter, the remaining 10 years as a fire prevention officer, 8, as chief fire prevention officer. John's duties, as an Assistant to the Fire Marshal, included enforcing The Ontario Fire Code for existing buildings, fire investigation and public fire safety education. As a designated building inspector, for new construction under building permit, John's duties included plans examination, and the inspection of commercial, industrial and residential properties for compliance with the Ontario Building Code.
As Chief Fire Prevention Officer for the Oakville Fire Department John managed and implemented policy that led to the retrofit of more than 100 low- rise and high-rise buildings in the Town of Oakville. In public fire safety education John was also recognized by the National Fire Protection Association, for implementing the Learn Not to Burn Fire Safety Education Program for grades K-8 in both the Halton Public and Separate School Boards. He was instrumental in implementing The Arson Prevention Program For Children
(TAPP-C) to address child fire setting. For his fire prevention achievements in his community, the Kiwanas Club of Oakville presented John with the 1995 Fire fighter Of The Year Award.
John graduated from the Ontario Fire College with diplomas in both the Basic and Advanced Fire Protection and Fire Prevention Programs,and from the Mohawk College Fire Safety and Fire Science Certificate Programs. He also passed and completed the pre-requisite Ministry of Housing and Development Courses to achieve his Certified Building Code Designation through the Ontario Building Officials Association.
He served as a Director and President of the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officers' Association. In this capacity, John represented the Ontario Municipal Fire Prevention Officer's Association on numerous committees, with the Office of the Fire Marshal, in developing the Retrofit Legislation for accessory apartments. John also served as a member of the Fire Marshals Public Fire Safety Council and as a director for the Canadian Fire Safety Association.
Upon his early retirement, John decided to utilize his many years of experience in inspections and operated a home inspection franchise. He then decided to start his own home and commercial inspection business. Thus, At Home Building Inspection Services was born. John is a Registered Home Inspector (RHI) with the Ontario Association of Home Inspectors, Certified Building Code Official, Ontario Building Officials Association, and a W.E.T.T. Basic Inspector for solid fuel appliances and chimneys.He is also a member of the Canadian Fire Safety Association. He is a member in good standing in all of the above Associations.
